Krea is two products under one name, and that decides whether you should leave it. One half is a real-time canvas where the image changes as you type or draw — as of mid-October 2026 nothing else ships it the same way. The other half is a storefront renting other companies’ models — Nano Banana 2, Seedance 2.0, Veo 3.1, plus Krea’s own Krea 2 and Krea 3 — and that half is easy to replace for less. So the best Krea alternative depends on which half you open.

Use the live canvas and switching is a downgrade whatever the replacement generates. Use Krea only as one login to frontier models and the alternatives are cheaper, sometimes better.

Real-time drawing versus waiting for a batch

The live canvas is the one thing Krea does that the field does not. Real-time models are included even on the free plan: drag a shape or finish a sentence and watch the picture resolve. That loop — prompt, see, adjust, see — differs from typing a prompt and waiting for four options.

Every hosted alternative is batch. Midjourney is still the aesthetic benchmark and V8.2 narrowed the gap, but you write a prompt, wait, pick, and reroll; there is no live surface. Ideogram, Freepik and Leonardo work the same way. For a finished frame that is often faster than nudging a canvas, but still a different job. If you pay Krea for the drawing loop, nothing here replaces it.

Style lock: training a LoRA versus referencing one

Krea trains a LoRA on images you upload — 50 images on free and Pro, up to 2,000 on Max — so a character or house style stops drifting. Krea 2 LoRA training opened to everyone this spring (krea.ai/blog).

The alternatives split. Midjourney takes a style and character reference with no training step, faster to set up and less precise. Local generation is the other route: a FLUX or Stable Diffusion checkpoint in ComfyUI trains unlimited LoRAs for your electricity and an evening of setup, and you own the file. Leonardo sits between them, with rented models and a monthly credit bucket rather than a daily one.

What the free tier actually refills

Krea’s free plan gives 100 units a day, resets daily, needs no card, and includes a commercial licence, plus unlimited relaxed generations on its own models once units are spent. The catch: free-tier video concurrency is zero, so video models you can technically reach are unusable at volume, and 20,000 units on Pro is closer to a few hundred frontier images than a studio’s month.

Midjourney has no free tier. Google’s Gemini app gives a daily image allowance, and Leonardo hands out 150 fast tokens that refresh daily. Local FLUX is the only genuinely unlimited option, paid in GPU time. Krea’s free tier is broad — it reaches frontier models the others do not — but thin.

When to pick which

FAQ

Is there any real alternative to Krea’s real-time canvas? Not in the same form. The closest is a local ComfyUI setup with a fast model for live preview, which costs more setup and a capable GPU. Every hosted competitor here is batch.

Can I use Krea for free? Yes — 100 units a day, no card, a commercial licence, and unlimited relaxed generations on in-house models once units run out. Heavy daily use is what pushes you to a paid plan.

What replaces Krea’s model shelf for less? Renting the same frontier models directly where they cost less, or a local FLUX setup. Both cut the middle man, though neither gives one login.

Does Krea train custom styles? Yes — LoRAs from 50 images on free and Pro, up to 2,000 on Max. The free allowance is enough to test whether a trained style beats a reference prompt.

What if I need text inside the image? Then Krea is the wrong axis; Ideogram and Recraft solved legible type, and our Ideogram alternatives guide compares them. The Midjourney alternatives roundup covers the wider field.

The call

If you use the live canvas, Krea has no true alternative and leaving is a downgrade — pay for the plan and ignore the shelf. If you only ever used Krea as a cheap door to other companies’ models, that door is not worth a subscription: rent the models directly, or go local, and keep the difference. Krea’s moat is the drawing loop, not the catalogue.
